Youth choir Kamēr...

The youth choir Kamēr... was founded in 1990 on the initiative of conductor Māris Sirmais, who is still the artistic director and principal conductor. Jānis Liepiņš has been assistant conductor since 2006, and Aina Bajāre and Ansis Sauka serve as vocal coaches. The choir was founded and still rehearses at Riga’s First State grammar school. Kamer… now includes about seventy young singers, and has successfully toured Germany, Poland, Austria, Switzerland, France, Italy, the Netherlands, the Czech Republic, Denmark, Spain, China, and the U.S.A.

Kamēr…  has been honored with the Great Music Award of Latvia and has also won the Grand Prix of the last three All-Latvian Song Festivals, as well as prizes from more than 70 international competitions. Notable victories include the Marktoberdorf chamber choir competition in Germany (1999), as well as first prizes at international choral competitions in Spittal an der Drau (Austria, 1999, 2005), Tolosa (Spain, 1996 and 2001), Tours (France, 2003), and Gorizia (Italy, 1995 and 1996).

Among the choir’s top honors is the European Grand Prix for Choral Singing (Goriza, Italy, 2004). Kamēr... was the first Latvian choir to win this prize. The competition is organized by the six most prestigious international choral competitions in Europe - the winners of these competitions are invited to participate in the competition for the title of Europe’s best choir of the year. Another highlight was participation in the Choir Olympics China 2006 (Xianmen, China, 2006): the choir received the championship title, with the highest scores in every category.

Kamer… has worked with some of the world’s leading musicians in concerts and festivals in Latvia and abroad. They perform regularly at the Lockenhaus chamber music festival in Austra, and have sung alongside Gidon Kremer and the KREMERata Baltica under the noted conductor and soloist Peter Schreier, as well as violinists Yuri Bashmet and Maxim Rysanov, cellist Julius Berger, and many others. The choir has also participated in personal concerts for the composers Arvo Pärt, Giya Kanchelli and Pēteris Vasks. In 2006 Kamēr... performed in a concert at Latvia’s National Opera House in Riga for a meeting of NATO Heads of State, International Government officials and other distinguised guests of Latvian President Vaira Vīķe-Freiberga.

2008 was a special year for the choir since world-wide premiere of a unique project - "World Sun songs", involving 17 world-famous composers from 16 countries - took place on 3rd and 4th of July in Great Hall of the University of Latvia. Most of the composers attended the concerts, which were later nominated for the Great Music award of Latvia.

Soon after participating in Latvian Song and Dance festival the choir visited The 8th World Symposium on Choral Music in Copenhagen.

Currently Maris Sirmais and the Youth choir "Kamēr..." are preparing for the concerts and festivals in summer 2009 and already having visions about events in honour of choir's 20th anniversary.
