The origin of the project World Sun Songs lies in 2005 when the project Latvia – the Land of Sun was realized in cooperation with the President of Latvia of that time – Vaira Vīķe-Freiberga. During this former project eight Latvian composers composed pieces specially for the choir Kamēr... with the text picked by Vaira Vīķe-Freiberga from Latvian folk songs about the sun. The pieces were performed in the concerts dedicated to the choir’s 15th anniversary.
Continuing the collaboration with the choir Kamēr as a folklore researcher, Vaira Vīķe-Freiberga is the patroness of the project World Sun Songs.
Māris Sirmais and the choir Kamēr... with the project World Sun Songs continue the topic of the sun outside the borders of Latvia by spanning all the continents of the world.
For the project World Sun Songs Kamēr... has invited 17 composers from 16 countries to write pieces for the Kamēr... about the sun. You can find the composers participating in the project here.
The uniqueness of this project lies not only within the fact that the participating composers are known globally, but also because the majority of the composers attended at the first performance of the works in Riga on 3rd and 4th of July in the Great Hall of the University of Latvia.
The choir was soon after invited to perform the project’s program at the World Choir Symposium in Copenhagen in July 2008. That was the start of international demonstration for this program.
World Sun Songs is a project with of a great and conceptually vast scope. Therefore the execution of this project is possible due to the supporters – a long term supporter of the choir Lattelecom Ltd., the Ministry of Culture and the Riga City Council.
The project World Sun Songs is meant to be a dynamic musical trip around the world from the sunrise till the sunset that was directed by the director Juris Pakalniņš.
The author of the artistic conception of the project is the artist Ilmārs Blumbergs.
The designer of the stage attire of the choir members is the dress designer Kristīne Pasternaka.
