World Sun Songs –
a unique musical and art project
A unique mega project
that does not fall behind Richard Wagner’s Nibelung Ring Cycle due
to its scope and significance. Extraordinary scope pushed by the artistic
courage and fanaticism of the conductor Māris Sirmais; it is unbelievable
even for such an experienced choir as is his youth choir Kamēr…
I ask for forgiveness to everyone not mentioned here though they have
deserved it. The World Sun Songs project is totally inconceivable -
18 choir opuses from 16 countries and 17 composers – all of them figuratively
and philosophically different: religious, folkloristic, full of pantheism,
artistic, acoustically exquisite or on purpose academically unsmooth
aspects of the sun.

The Latvian composer Raimonds Pauls within the framework of the project World Sun Songs
Has Raimonds Pauls often been speculating on the topic of the Sun? “I have thought of it within the context of Latvian climate. When one has had to live with dullness and grey clouds for months on end, and then one day the sun appears, the person is revived. I even forgot the pain in my back!” His song Splendid Sun in the Sky with poetry written in the style of Latvian folksongs by Inese Zandere, has turned out to be the shortest among the newly written choir opuses by sixteen composers from all over the world, which have been created at the invitation of conductor Māris Sirmais for the “World Sun Songs” project.
